Gary Kapp was born in Ogden, UT in 1942. When he was four, his father bought a ranch in Oregon where he was raised until he went to college. As an engineering student he still enrolled in as many art classes as he could. During his second year of university be began working doing commercial art for an ad agency. He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1966 with a B.S. degree, then worked for 10 years with a motion picture studio producing filmstrips and painting backdrops. He continued graduate work in the evenings and spent one summer studying with Kenneth Riley and Charles Lee. Kapp paints Western subjects, both historical and contemporary. Most of his works tell a story, and his art has made a lasting impression on collectors of Western Art. He merges realism with the shading and soft edges characteristic of romanticism.
